Each year on November 14, the global community comes together to recognize World Diabetes Day. This year, World Diabetes Day 2024 focuses on a critical, ongoing issue—access to essential diabetes care. Despite advancements in diabetes research, millions of people worldwide still lack access to necessary medication, like insulin, and essential management tools. This year’s theme calls for urgent advocacy and action to address these disparities and ensure that everyone with diabetes has the resources they need to lead healthy, fulfilling lives.
In low-income regions, such as parts of Sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America, insulin and blood glucose monitoring devices remain scarce and unaffordable for many people. According to the International Diabetes Federation, nearly half of people with diabetes in these areas cannot access or afford essential treatment. Lack of access often results in preventable complications, such as blindness, kidney disease, and amputations, and ultimately shortens the lifespan of people living with diabetes. In rural regions of Africa, for example, a single vial of insulin can cost up to half a family’s monthly income, making effective diabetes management a luxury that many cannot afford.
The situation is not limited to low-income countries. Even in high-income regions like the United States, barriers to affordable insulin continue to be a challenge. Rising insulin prices have forced some individuals to ration their doses, leading to adverse health outcomes and raising the risk of life-threatening complications. Advocacy is essential to push for systemic changes, ensuring that lifesaving diabetes medication is accessible and affordable for everyone, regardless of geographic or economic barriers.
Advocacy Action: Support Global Diabetes Care for All
On World Diabetes Day 2024, let’s unite in the call for equity in diabetes care. Consider joining an advocacy network or supporting organizations that work to make diabetes medication and supplies affordable and accessible. By raising our voices collectively, we can push policymakers, pharmaceutical companies, and global health organizations to prioritize access to diabetes care and bridge the gaps that prevent millions from accessing essential treatment. Together, we can strive toward a world where every individual with diabetes, no matter where they live, has the support they need to manage their health and thrive.
