The T1D Index Enhancements in 2024

The T1D Index has emerged as a transformative tool since its initial launch in September 2022, redefining how we measure the global impact of type 1 diabetes (T1D). The T1D Index has been pivotal in highlighting the human and public health challenges of T1D while identifying targeted interventions. Its 2024 updates introduce critical new capabilities and insights to empower advocates and policymakers globally.

The updated T1D Index now features an enhanced dashboard and user interface, improving usability for researchers, advocates, and policymakers. With validated data from national registries and plans for region-specific granularity, the Index is a more precise tool for understanding T1D’s burden, particularly in underrepresented regions.

The Index’s advanced simulation capabilities allow users to model the impact of key interventions, including:

  • Timely diagnosis: Ensuring healthcare providers are trained to diagnose T1D early could save over 668,000 lives by 2040.
  • Access to insulin and testing supplies: Removing barriers could prevent 1.98 million deaths globally.
  • Technology adoption: Equipping individuals with glucose monitoring and insulin delivery systems could save an additional 673,000 lives.
  • Investment in cures: Accelerating research could further save 890,000 lives

The T1D Index uniquely quantifies the toll of “missing people” (those who died prematurely due to T1D) and “healthy years lost” to the condition, providing a comprehensive view of its human and economic costs. These insights aim to influence policies for better access to insulin, advanced therapies, and long-term solutions to improve quality of life.

As it evolves, the T1D Index continues to be a powerful resource in advocating for equity in T1D care. It equips communities worldwide with the data needed to address gaps and foster change.

Advocacy Action

Advocates are encouraged to share these findings with local parliamentary leaders and stakeholders, amplifying the case for universal, uninterrupted access to life-saving T1D care. By leveraging this tool, we can work towards a future where no one is left behind in the fight against type 1 diabetes.
