JDRF Becomes Breakthrough T1D

JDRF, the leading global organisation for type 1 diabetes (T1D) research and advocacy, has rebranded as Breakthrough T1D. The new name, revealed during the annual Government Day conference in Washington, D.C., reflects the organisation’s expanded mission and the evolving understanding of T1D.

Originally known as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, JDRF was founded in 1970 by families of children with T1D. At that time, T1D was thought to primarily affect young people, hence the focus on “juvenile diabetes.” However, it is now recognised that T1D can be diagnosed at any age. As a result, the name became less representative of the broader community. Over the years, the organisation expanded its focus beyond research for a cure to also include improving access to care for all people with T1D.

“As Breakthrough T1D, we are better positioned to engage the entire T1D community and continue our leadership in research, advocacy, and support,” said Dr Aaron J. Kowalski, CEO of Breakthrough T1D. “This new name reflects our commitment to accelerating life-changing breakthroughs.”

The rebranding underscores the organisation’s role in advancing scientific discovery, developing new therapies, and advocating for improved access to treatment and care for people with T1D.

Breakthrough T1D introduced its new name and brand strategy at the Government Day conference, the largest T1D advocacy event in the United States, which brings together volunteer advocates from across the country. The organisation will continue to champion the needs of the global T1D community, with international affiliates gradually transitioning to the new name.
