CAPTION: 650 Million mobile phone users in Africa
The World Bank and African Development Bank report there are 650 million mobile phone users in Africa, surpassing the number in the United States or Europe.
In some African countries more people have access to a mobile phone than to clean water, a bank account or electricity. Medical technology companies are slowly discovering a market overlooked in the past.
It should not be a surprise then that in the city region of Nakuru in Kenya, the County Government has unveiled a mobile app to help in the treatment and management of diabetes and hypertension.
Healthcare services incorporated in the digital system dubbed ‘Empower Health’ created through a partnership between the devolved administration, the Ministry of Health, Novo Nordisk and Medtronic Labs include consultations, tests, treatment and monitoring of the important medical conditions according to national and best practice guidelines.
Advocacy Action: Is your healthcare system taking advantage of mobile phone usage among people with diabetes? Is there more that can be done to use new technology to drive improvements in health care?
