Government plans in the Canadian province of Alberta to change funding for insulin pumps have been put on hold following fears expressed by MPs and people with Type 1 diabetes.
Alberta’s health minister apologised and said the changes, which were to begin in August are being put off pending consultations to make sure no one is forced to choose between a pump and putting food on the table.
The health minister was responding to questions in the legislature about the concerns of around 4,000 Albertans who use insulin pumps.
The Government had said that it would change how it funds the pumps, small programmable machines that deliver insulin to patients throughout the day.
Advocacy Action: Never let a question time session, or other accountability mechanism to pass without a question on diabetes. PDGN can always supply ideas, but the best questions are the ones on issues local to you either direct or from the public or your national diabetes organisation.
