The call came from Dr Peter Rossing, head of complications research at Steno Diabetes Center in Copenhagen. He claimed that type 1 diabetes (T1D) patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) have largely been forgotten.
While the management of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in patients with diabetes has been transformed in recent years, studies have focused mainly on patients with T2 diabetes, and patients with T1 diabetes have largely been left out. This is believed to have led to early and unnecessary deaths in T1D patients.
Other speakers presented results of studies suggesting a high prevalence of CKD disease in T1D patients.
A trial in the Netherlands was presented that confirmed a major unmet need among this group of patients.
Advocacy Action: Are there any statistics in your country for the numbers of T1D patients with Chronic Kidney Disease? Could you work with your national diabetes and or your kidney patient association to raise the profile of this connection both to assist existing patients, but also to highlight another expensive complication of diabetes that could be reduced?
