PDGN in Liverpool

PDGN Secretary General, Adrian Sanders, attended the Diabetes UK Professional Conference in Liverpool where new research was presented that has pinpointed five unique combinations of genes that either help protect people living with obesity and overweight from developing type 2 diabetes, or increase their risk.

There were sessions on the issues facing the care of adults with early onset type 2 diabetes and the need to do better to improve outcomes.

Results from NHS England’s hybrid closed loop pilot were revealed, giving vital real-world evidence confirming the life-changing benefits the technology can bring for children and adults with type 1 diabetes.

The conference’s final named lecture came from Dr Louise Goff. Her Harry Keen Rank Nutrition Lecture walked us through the development of a culturally tailored self-management programme for African and Caribbean people living with type 2 diabetes, from its co-creation to implementation.

Progress to preventing type 1 diabetes by bringing together autoantibody screening and immunotherapies was revealed with Dr Rachel Besser sharing results on the feasibility of screening pre-school children in primary care, while Prof Susan Wong recapped evidence on the world’s first approved immunotherapy for type 1 diabetes, Teplizumab.
