Top researchers in the field of type 1 diabetes (T1D) signed an open letter in support of renewed funding for the JDRF (now Breakthrough T1D) and CIHR (Canadian Institutes of Health Research) Partnership to Defeat diabetes through Federal Budget 2024, for a promising approach to curing type 1 diabetes (T1D) called islet replacement therapy.
In T1D, the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing islet cells. Islet replacement therapy involves replacing damaged islets in the pancreas with new, functional ones.
Canada is a world leader in islet replacement research, and researchers have made significant progress. Continued funding is essential to move this research from clinical trials to widespread availability. Researchers are requesting CAN $50 million from the federal government, to be matched by CAN $25 million from JDRF Canada. This investment would accelerate critical research and development to bring islet replacement therapy closer to reality.
A successful cure for type 1 diabetes would significantly improve the lives of the 300,000 Canadians living with this condition, as well as millions of people with diabetes worldwide.
